Ranting about Blogging

My friend Ashley and I were talking the other day on the subway about how some of the fashion blogs we follow, as they’ve become more popular, their clothing has become more and more expensive. Just the other day I was looking one of my favorite blogs and she had this adorable knit lace top that I would love, so I clicked through the link only to find out it was $250. TWO HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS. Alright, well, I wear Target clothes. And The Limited sales rack. And I’m perfectly fine with it. It just is unbelievable to think anyone, other than a rich celebrity would ever buy a shirt for that much money. And then… they link it on their blog thinking, hey guys, just in case you want to buy this shirt too here it is…. oh wait, you might have to take out a loan first.

And then there’s the kids fashion. I love to have Eva dressed in cute clothes. But have you seen that girl? 95% of the time, she’s wearing a dress over the outfit I put her in. Why? Well, I think it’s cool to make her look like a hippie all the time. Just kidding… Eva loves wearing dresses and I want her to be happy, so you’ve got to choose your battles. Anyway, I’ll be looking at a blog for kid’s clothes, they’ll link something adorable, and it will cost more than my grocery bill. So, no, thanks. I’m not going to buy a dress for $80 at Anthropologie, just because Eva looks darling in it. I’ll take the cute $15 Carters dress that is adorable but has a friendly price tag. Ashley said she was looking at cute boy leggings and they were THIRTY dollars. All organic, and made of the most precious materials apparently. Can we just get the NON-organic leggings, please? I never had organic clothes growing up. And frankly, I don’t even know what that means or why it’s so important for clothing unless you have allergies. So, let’s bring the price tag down to ten bucks now. Great.

One last thing. My kid plays with bulky, colorful, plastic toys. AND SHE LOVES IT. They might not be pleasing-to-the-eye and are more of an eyesore in my home instead, but I’m not the one playing with them. SHE IS. So, when did it become un-cool to let your kid play with those fun, bright, noise-making toys? How come on all the kids blogs these days, everyone is playing with these fancy wooden, antique, hand-crafted, all-natural, pieces of art? Did I go too far with that one? I’m sorry. I just think we need to stop caring if our kid isn’t playing with the trendiest toy from Etsy, and instead start letting our kids play with the FUN toys they enjoy while wearing princess gowns over their Target, sales-rack, clothes! Enough is enough, so let’s stop this crazy blog trend because I just don’t think it’s real life! My life might not look like it’s out of a magazine but we sure know how to have fun and play!

P.S. Am I saying we shouldn’t own ANY precious Melissa and Doug toys or occasionally splurge on a nice outfit for us or our kids? No! My life motto is TREAT YO’SELF! I love the Janie & Jack store just as much as the next person! But let’s get real, be smart about our money, and let our kids be kids! And that $250 blouse… yeah, that’s never going to happen in my neck of the woods even if I had the money to buy it. Ridiculous.

Valentine’s Day Baking

With all the snow storms we’ve had these past couple of weeks, Eva and I have turned to baking/cooking in the kitchen. We just ate our sorrows away with lots of Valentine themed food.

Thank goodness I have this little helper to keep me in line! She LOVES eating dough/making a mess helping in the kitchen.

25 Months

It feels ridiculous to call Eva’s age, “25 months.” But I like documenting what’s going on in Eva’s life each month, and we already have the system in place… so why change it?

So, now that Eva is 25 months old, she is as silly as ever. Today at church, she was looking at her picture book and there was a girl doing a hand stand. What did Eva do then? Tried to do a hand stand. Right there in church.

Her speech has also taken off, which is so exciting. It’s not just words now, she’s saying short sentences! The best one? “I love you.” Then we’ve got, “Mom, come here.” And, “Me help?” Which doesn’t mean, “Can I help?” It means, “Help me.”

Ashley was watching her the other day and she couldn’t get a toy to work. Eva then said, “It’s not working.” It’s so crazy to hear her say new things everyday. I’m such a proud momma.

Eva loves arts and crafts. We water-color, do play-dough, color, draw, and paint all the time. Eva also loves princesses and babies. If she can wear a princess dress while tending to her babies, life is bliss. She loves dancing, playing patty-cake, reading, playing in her tent, and running (“ME RUN, PEEEEEASE?”). I think my favorite thing though about Eva right now is how she is always singing a little song. Most of the time it’s Twinkle, but she occasionally switches it up.

Meet Ashbo, Eva’s Fish (aka the animal in the humidifier)

I was going through my Instagram and I realized I forgot to post this little story on my blog.

A month or so ago, Eva woke up coughing and I bought her a humidifier (I wrote about that a while back…). After filling up the tank, Eva was crying and so I was trying to do anything to get her to settle down since I knew the tears would make her cold worse. Nothing worked, so I told her to come look at the humidifier. The next part went sort of like this:

Me: Eva, come look at the humidifier.
Eva: (Still crying)
Me: Look… what does it look like? Does it look like a fish tank…?
Eva: (Starting to calm down and acting curious)
Me: (Then my mind just led one thing to another and I started telling a little white lie…) Yeah… Eva… it’s a fish tank! Maybe you should look in there and you might see a fish!
Eva: (Running over and getting excited)
Me: You know… a fish… yeah… an ANIMAL! There’s an ANIMAL in here… COME LOOK!
Eva: ANIMAL!

There you have it. I felt so bad because for about a whole week, Eva would try so hard to look for the fish in the tank. Then she started calling it Ashbo. I have no idea where that came from but she STILL talks about Ashbo to this day.

Eva is TWO!

Screen Shot 2013-12-12 at 4.54.41 PM

My little baby is TWO YEARS OLD! I cannot believe it! It feels just like yesterday when we checked into the hospital. Heck, it feels just like yesterday when I found out we were expecting! And here we are. With a two year old!

Since we were in DC for Eva’s actual birthday, my sister was so nice and made a cake for Eva. We opened a couple presents together before we hit the road, and then opened up some more presents when we got back to Jersey.

Eva was so excited to open her presents and even learned the word, “Birthday!” She sings bits and pieces of the birthday song, “Happppppyyyyyy twooooo.” It’s adorable.

Not much is different since last month when I wrote about Eva, but she does/says some really funny things these days. She likes to say the word “sad” and frown and then she immediately says “happy!” and jumps and smiles. She’s already practicing being emotional, and turning on and off tears. That’s my girl! Ha!

Eva loves her babies. We have a little Baby Jesus and she gives it lots of kisses from herself and from her other dolls. I caught her having her Belle doll kiss Baby Jesus. I guess Belle would love Baby Jesus though.

One of Eva’s favorite toys right now is her new tent that she got from her Swainhart grandparents. She spends most of the day in there reading and asking me to “come” inside. She grabs my hand and pulls me while saying over and over, “Come, come, come mommy, come!” We sit inside and read, play babies, and just hang out.

Eva loves coloring, playing with play dough, watching Winnie the Pooh, talking/watching/singing about Santa, doing puzzles, taking baths, using her rolly backback around the house, wearing dresses (especially her new dress from the Derrick grandparents, and her new Cinderella dress from her Aunt Hannah), and singing/dancing to music.

Everyday Eva asks to go on a walk, which is so cute to me. “Walk, mommy? Walk?” Other funny things: She comes up to me with her Halloween trick or treat bag, and say, “TREAAAAATTTTTT!” It’s December and she is STILL doing this. If she hears any noices in our apartment building outside, she thinks Daddy is home and looks at me while saying, “DADDY?!?!” That’s pretty adorable. She loves our friends Ashley and Brooks. Pretty much any baby she sees, even if it’s a drawing (she point to the drawing of a baby on the changing tables at the mall) and says, “BROOKS!” She ran over to Ashley and said mommy once, so I think it’s safe to say she’s Ashley’s biggest fan.

Eva is pretty mischevious at times, and she knows it. She’ll look at me before doing something she knows she shouldn’t do. Or show me that she did something she wasn’t supposed to do. Such as coloring on the table/wood floor, playing in the vaseline (why do I keep leaving that out???), throwing food on the floor, taking all the tissues out of the box, and pouring bath water out of the bath. But then she does something adorable and it makes me forget about her craziness!

That’s all I can think of right now, but everyday she makes us laugh and smile. I wish I could capture it all and write about everything!

Happy Birthday, Eva! I am so excited to see you learn and grow this year!

Babysitting Swap

My friend Ashley in our ward who lives very close has a six month old. Two weeks ago, I watched Brooks for the afternoon on Tuesday when she ran errands in the city. Then on Wednesday, Ashley watched the kids while I went to the temple. Eva and I picked up Brooks from her apartment and then walked back to our place where I put both kids down for a nap. I was expecting it to be horrible and so hard, but of course both kids were angels and went down without crying and slept for hours. I made Ashley remind me how newborns don’t sleep well through the night to get rid of my VERY mild baby hunger. 🙂 It did the trick.

Anyway, it was really nice how it worked out. We both got a much-needed day out and the kids acted well on both days. I’m hoping we can do this more often since it’s hard to get out much in the winter with kids.

23 Months

DSC01520

DSC01524

Wow, I cannot believe we are to 23 months already! Next month, Eva is going to be 2! TWO! Goodness sakes, where did time go? Where did my baby go? Eva is growing up more and more every day, which is SO exciting. But I also want to soak up every bit of baby Eva for as long as I can.

This month as been fun, as usual, with Eva. Every day she says more and more words, I can’t keep up with them any more. My favorite words she says are Church (because she asks to go to church all the time, which is just adorable and so sweet) and Halloween (because it’s such a big word and her eyes get big when she says it!). She also has her own Eva language and at times, she will carry on whole conversations with herself in this mumbo jumbo. It’s a riot.

She’s starting to remember the sounds of numbers too, which is funny. Unnnnnn, twoooooo, teeeeee. Then she’ll start saying random letters, so we’re still working on it. But Eva impresses me every day!

Eva loves her babies. She is always concerned about them, pretends to burp them, put them in the bath with her (the ones that are water proof, although she wants to put all of them in), combs their hair, she even brought her snow white figurine (it’s like two inches tall) to the dinner table last night and tried to feed her. It actually worked out well because I’d say, “One bite for Snow White,” then she would feed Snow and then I’d say, “One bite for Eva.” And Eva would eat it! She ate tons at dinner last night, much more than usual. So, we’ll be trying that trick again.

At night, Eva has to say goodnight to Mickey and to Blue. So, we watch a couple minutes of her favorite episodes on my phone, where she will then kiss the phone. I don’t know where she comes up with this stuff, but don’t worry mom… we also pray at night and read books! She still loves to be sung to at night and would have me sing to her for hours if I’d let her. “More, More, More!” We sang Christmas songs last night and I realized I don’t know all the words to those carols!

Eva sings along with me, as well. She knows a couple words to Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree, Twinkle Twinkle, Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam, and the goodnight song from the Music Together series. It’s adorable to hear her sing in her sweet, high voice. She loves to make hand motions and to dance along.

Shoes are another favorite of Eva’s. Not just her shoes, which she’s obsessed with her church shoes that have bows, but my shoes. Every day, she walks around in my shoes that she gets out of the closet. The higher the heel, it seems like, the better. It kind of scares me, I don’t want her to twist her ankle. But she loves them so much! We were walking past a shoe store in the mall yesterday, and she sat down (just in the middle of the walkway), took off her shoes and tried to put on the sample shoes that were at the door. She loves fashion more than me!

Another funny thing this month is that Eva has discovered her love for clocks. She’s always loved her Grandpa and Grandma’s clock that makes music every hour, and when we Facetime with them, she always asks to see the clock. So, I think that’s where the love came from. Then she found an old watch of T.J.’s and asks to see the clock on my phone. Whenever we are out, she likes to point out the clocks. The bigger the better, and when they make noise, she loves it! For her birthday or Christmas, I’ve found this clock puzzle for her! I think it’ll be a huge hit!

There’s still not much success with the stroller with Eva. I can get her to sit in there for about 30 minutes tops if I bribe her with a juice box, candy, or any other treat. I’ve gotten more used to the idea of letting her wander around, especially at the mall. We usually don’t even take the stroller anymore. I figure she needs to run around anyway, she needs exercise! But I haven’t taken her to the grocery store for about two weeks now, because it’s really hard when she doesn’t want to sit in her stroller.

I’m currently going through a little bit of separation anxiety with her. On Saturday, I was at a church activity for women, and it went really late, which meant I got home after she went to bed. Guys, I cried! I think it’s because we spend so much time together and rarely are apart these days. But I also think it’s because she’s growing up and is going to be 2 next month… it’s really getting to me!

Well, that’s it for now… until next month… her birthday! YIKES!

21 and 22 Months

Oops! September flew by and I forgot to post for 21 Month Old Eva. So, I’ll clump these two months together because it’s pretty much the same.

cinci-reds-640-1-7

These past couple months Eva has become very strong willed and even more independent. That being said, she’s growing up right before my eyes but is also at times a handful! Boy, does she make me laugh. We have a lot of fun at home since she is constantly full of surprises.

Eva loves shoes. She is always walking out of the bedroom wearing a different pair of shoes. Her sandals, my heals, TJ’s dress shoes. She loves them all.

She is very friendly. Eva makes so many people smile on the subway and is constantly saying hi to everyone around her and playing games with other kids.

cinci-reds-640-4

Naps the past couple of weeks have been inconsistent. She sleeps in until 10 am just about everyday, so I think that’s the reason she’s having trouble taking an afternoon nap now that she’s not depending on her bottle. When we get back to Jersey, my plan is to wake her up at 9, and push back her bedtime to 8:30. We had been putting her to bed at about 9:30 because TJ doesn’t get to see her much, but I need my afternoon break for my sanity and to get a couple hours of work accomplished. Hopefully that’ll do the trick.

Eva wants to walk everywhere. She does not want to hold my hand, and she wants to go at her own pace. Whether that means we are chasing after her as she runs through the halls at church, or begging her to come on as she dilly-dallies on the sidewalk. I am seriously praying (no a joke) that this thing of hers-not wanting to sit in her stroller-is just a phase. It is making life very hard since my feet and the stroller are our means of transportation to get everywhere every day. So, really… please pray that Eva will want to sit in her stroller again because it is making life in Jersey extremely difficult.

cinci-reds-640-1-8

Something funny that has happened these past couple months is that Eva loves wearing dresses so much. It’s normally not a problem, unless we need to go the park and Eva wants to wear her Easter dress or she wants to go to church in her Minnie dress. So, I have hid the dresses so that they only come out at certain times to avoid tantrums.

Since we took Eva off the bottle, she is eating a lot better but is still picky. I’ve been reading up on how to make your child a good eater, even if they have bad habits already. I’ve found lots of good tips but it sure takes a lot of work and consistency! It’s definitely a work in progress, but step one of getting her off the bottle is at least completed and it’s already making a difference.

We bought a potty for Eva a couple months back and she’s used it here and there. She went number 2 here at my parents’ which was exciting (even though I still get weirded out cheering on my daughter in that situation). But I decided I’m not ready to potty train her yet. It was a rough couple weeks getting her off the bottle, then having her cut a new molar, and then this whole stroller ordeal is driving me nuts. So, I’m giving myself a break and not worrying about doing it until after Christmas break.

cinci-reds-640-1-3

Other current favorites: brushing her teeth, playing with her babies, dancing, parks, dresses, FaceTiming with both sets of grandparents, coloring, Mickey, Blue’s Clues, any type of animal, reading books, helping me cook, sweeping the floor, throwing away things, being naked, taking off her shoes, yogurt, looking at pictures of family and friends, baths, entertaining herself.

Strong Willed

I have a strong willed child and at times, now that she is getting older, it is getting difficult. I love my diva Eva to death, but am looking for tips on how to make sure I parent her to the best of my capabilities. Anyone know of any good books that I can read about this? I hear The Strong Willed Child by James Dobson is one I need to read. Any others I should check out at the library? Any other tips greatly appreciated.

No More Bottles!

This week I decided I was ready to ween Eva off of bottles. There were a couple reasons why:

  1. Eva was using it to soothe herself, like a pacifier.
  2. She was drinking way too much milk.
  3. Because of how much milk she was drinking, she never wanted to eat much food since it was filling her up.

Monday, first thing when Eva woke up, she asked for her “ba-ba.” I told her the bottle was all gone, there was no more bottle! She went and found an empty one somewhere I forgot to put away and looked at me like, “No… here it is!” So, first tip of bottle weening, put all the bottles away 🙂 !

The first day was really rough. Especially for the first couple hours. She constantly was asking for the bottle and would throw huge tantrums when I told her it was gone and broken. I tried to give her milk in the sippy, but she wouldn’t take it (which I wasn’t surprised about, she never has like it from a sippy). I lined up all the cups and sippies out for her to choose one, thinking that would make it fun. She hated it. But distracting her worked (thanks for all the tips on Facebook!) and good ol’ fashion-bribing-her-with-candy worked too… ya gotta do what ya gotta do! It was a miracle she took a good nap that day and fell asleep at night after just 15 minutes of crying. I then cried in T.J.’s arms for a solid half an hour because I was so sad my sweet baby was growing up.

Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 4.35.21 PM

Day 2 Eva already had a bigger appetite, but was still asking for her bottle occasionally.

Day 3 was a big improvement… she woke up and asked for a sippy! I also got her to finally drink milk out of a cup using her Mickey Mouse straw!

Day 4, I really wanted her to drink milk at meals (the Mickey Mouse straw trick didn’t work), so I actually tried something similar to when we weened her from formula. When I got her off of formula, I used milk with the formula (instead of water) and then I slowly decreased the amount of formula until it was straight up milk. Instead of formula, I used chocolate Nesquik and told Eva it was a chocolate shake (to which she’d shake the sippy cup!). Of course she loved it, everyone loves chocolate milk! But now, a day later (Day 5), I barely put any Nesquik in the milk, so we are getting there!

So, here we are! It only took 5 days. Eva rarely asks for her bottle anymore, is drinking much more water, eating much more at meals, and is finally drinking milk at meals out of her sippy cup! I’m so glad we did it because I was getting so sick of bringing bottles of milk with us everywhere!
