Tomorrow is my mom’s birthday. This is not the “official-happy birthday” post, but I just can’t wait any longer… I want to write a post just about my amazing mom.

First of all, let’s talk about her talent. My mom has a beautiful singing voice and is very musical. She teaches elementary school kids music and is a wonderful teacher. Her room is colorful, deccorated, and the kids always have a blast when they get to go to “Miss Swainhart’s” room.

Sometimes Mom learns new things that she wants to teach her kids, but she tests them out on us first. When I was in high school, I would always give her such a hard time and tell her how weird it was that we would sing rhymes and do these weird acting games, but it was always so funny. One time she told us to say, “Someone stole my chocolate bunny, and I don’t think it’s very funny.” You’re supposed to do it in different accents and drama styles. Let me tell you, my mom would put so much energy in that weirdo rhyme, it kind of haunts me. Oh, and one of her favorite acting games that she sometimes will want to play with you is “Mirror Me.” I’m sure you can figure out what you do in that game. Good think Blair was always around in high school, or else she wouldn’t have had anyone to cooperate with her.

My mom also loves to exercise. She is a kickboxer through and through. Don’t mess with the Nanster, she knows what she’s doing. She has the gloves and everything! I’d post a video of her doing a Billy Blanks dvd, but I don’t think she would really appreciate that. If we watch a movie at home, she turns on a kickboxing dvd on the computer and does it at the same time. When we stop at rest stops, she tries to speed walk a few miles, always seeking ways to get more steps in. She is an inspiration, along with my motivation because I know she will ask always ask me, “so what exercise did you do today?”

Next, my mother is so spiritual. I can’t tell you how many times I would accidentally walk in on her saying her prayers in the morning. And when I would try to come back in 5 minutes, I’d accidentally interrupt her again! She always reads her scriptures everyday, shares her insights with others, and is bold about what she believes. Mom would teach us the scriptures and the gospel through Family Home Evenings, reading the scriptures during breakfast where we would memorize different Psalms and Proverbs.

She was even my seminary teacher for a couple of years. It was hard sometimes, I must admit. Going to seminary (which is like a sunday-school class) everyday for four years at 6 a.m. was intense, but worth it. I remember the day I found out my mom was going to be the Seminary teacher. It was the day after Christmas and my Grandfather had died early that morning. And then our Bishop came over and asked my mom. Wow, that was an interesting day. But it all worked out and was truly a blessing to my life, along with my mom’s life. Slowly through the next years my classmates fell away, and all that was left was my mom and I. It was a struggle. We prayed so hard that they would come back to church and want to come to seminary, but usually it was just us. We’d still get up in the morning, sometimes my dad would join us. We’d hold seminary in the basement and start everyday off with a strong Spirit and peace in our home. It strengthened my relationship with my mom more than anything else in my life.

My mom is a hard worker. Peacemaker. Journal-writer. Parks & Rec-watcher. Pianist. Cook. Homemaker. Laugher. Grandmother. Positive-thinker. Cryer. Compassionate-healer. Shoulder to cry on. Provider. Best Friend.

Here are some sayings that were common around our house growing up. They used to drive me absolutely nuts, but now I find them quite funny, and the memories priceless. But worst of all, I catch myself saying them quite often.

  • “No Mon, No Fun!”
    • Mon=Money. My mom would say this to me all the time, which as a teenager, I hated. Now I think it is a really funny saying, and I say it to T.J. all the time (I told you I’m turning into my mom.)
  • “If Katie’s not happy, nobody’s happy.”
    • Still true.
  • “I’m up, everybody’s up.”
    • Boy, would that make me so mad when my mom would wake me up and say that phrase.
  • “Eat a banana,” or, “Sweep the floor.”
    • If I ever complained about being hungry or bored these were the responses I would get.

I need to find a new soap because everyday my whole body itches like crazy. I’m pretty sure it’s because my skin gets so dry out here in this no-humidity desert. But ,y legs, my back, my stomach, every little inch of me is suffering!

Oh, and don’t tell me to use lotion… because I do, and it is completely worthless. Sure it feels fine for about five minutes. But then it’s back to itches. Today I was so desperate that I rubbed Vaseline petroleum jelly all over my body. I thought that would do the trick. But it just made me sticky and hot.

Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe I’m allergic to the soap. I switched to bar soap once I got married because it’s cheaper. Maybe it’s time to gather up the pennies in the house and save up for some quality body wash.

I don’t know. I just need a solution. Is anyone else having this same problem?

What if the itches are really from bed bugs?!?

Well, folks, I made new curtains from some kitchen linens I got at Ikea. They were about one or two dollars for three of them. So I had the idea to stitch them together.

To hang them, I attached some hemp to the top. I also wrapped hemp around the curtain bar so it would match.

I found an assortment of planter pots at the thrift store for about a quarter each. I spray painted them different colors and then used chalk board paint so I could write on the pots. Turns out I’m not much of an artist and had a hard time painting, but maybe the messy work gives it a personal touch or flair? Next weekend I’m going to start planting!

I also got these jars for about a quarter each at the thrift store, which I was thrilled about. I want to decorate them somehow, but I’m not sure what I should do. Any ideas?

It’s time to put up new curtains in our condo. Considering T.J. and I have no money and are really trying to save as much as possible, I decided I would make my own! So I’ve looked around a bunch of blogs, and of course, Martha Stewart’s site and have come up with a few ideas.

For our kitchen:

I think this is an adorable idea! This blogger took old vintage hankies/tablecloths etc. and sewed them together, hanging it with twine. Could it be any cuter? Oh, not to mention her adorable plants above and jars below.

I love these curtains. They’re formal so they’d have to go in our living room, but have an adorable flair to them because of the cute pattern.

Okay, I know this doesn’t fit with the others. But I found this cute idea and had to share. Along with the following photograph:

Don’t you love how the hooks are made out of antique silverware?? Wow, I love this!

So with my new ideas, tomorrow I’m having a DIY day. Starting at the DI for old frames, fabric, and silverware, hopefully I’ll find some good stuff!

Mom, please don’t read the following post. But because I know you will, don’t judge and don’t worry, I take care of myself and eat a balanced diet.

Today my boss brought in donuts from Sugar and Spice, the bakery on campus. I usually am a die hard old fashioned with sprinkles type of girl, but today I was feeling bold. I tried the maple bar topped with bacon.

That’s right. As if the maple bar wasn’t already unhealthy enough, bacon is added to the top to seal the deal. But let me tell you, although you feel like a heart attack is in the near future when you eat this marvelous wonder, it tastes delicious. It’s like when your bacon would mix with your syrup during a nice breakfast. Nothing gets better than that.

Oh, hello adorable baby bed in the corner.

One of the blogs I follow had this cute recipe posted. I haven’t tried it, but it looks great!

7 whole Oreo Cookies

1 oz cold cream cheese

24 square pretzels

1 Cup chocolate chunks or chocolate chips, melted

White Sprinkles

1.  Place Oreos into a food processor and process until finely ground.  Mix Oreo crumbs and cream cheese until dough forms.  Pinch 1 Tablespoon of dough and form into a little square.  Place onto pretzel then gently press top pretzel to close.  Top with melted chocolate and white sprinkles.  Chill until chocolate has hardened and serve.

Makes 12 Pretzel Bites

This past weekend, Hannah and I decided to have lunch in Park City and then head on up to the Greek Festival downtown Salt Lake. The weather was incredible, the leaves have started to change so the drive was beautiful, and the food–both at lunch and the festival–was delicious. We finished off the night with baklava and rocking out to “Good Morning” by Chamillionaire on our way home. Great weekend!
