1. I can’t sleep very much anymore. I sleep for like four or five hours then wake up. That of course makes me extremely tired and so then after a couple of hours, I’m ready for another round of sleep. It’s awful and each cycle is filled with vivid dreams of the baby. Yesterday I dreamt that the baby finally started to breast-feed, she fell out of her cradle (that was awful), and then was old enough within a couple of days to play in the bathtub with those bath marker things. Bizarre stuff.
  2. Everyday I hope there will be snow. I think it’s because we have our tree up now and I feel like, if there’s snow out there, it doesn’t make me as crazy for putting the tree up before Thanksgiving. So, this 50 degree weather is really out of place.
  3. T.J. and I are contemplating so hard about getting an Xbox with Kinect for Christmas. It will be really inexpensive at Walmart on Black Friday. We never buy big things like that though, heck I won’t even buy jeans that are more than $30. BUT I LOVE THE KINECT! It is so much fun, a great workout, and could be our gift to each other for Christmas. On the other hand, it still is a lot of money. And we have a baby on the way that will cost a lot. Tell me what to do!
  4. My cold is almost gone! It only took three weeks.
  5. My doctor said no progress still down there with the baby stuff. So, I said, “Well, at least it won’t come on Thanksgiving.” And then he replied, “You can say that on Friday.” Being a ticking time bomb is kind of crazy.
  6. I get to make my pies today for Thanksgiving! Can’t wait! Which reminds me, how do YOU say “pecan”?
  7. The news is on in the background and it’s showing all the holiday traffic and snowy roads through the country. It’s making me kind of happy that we are staying here and not dealing with it. But I sure am missing my family!
  8. Did I buy eggnog at the store yesterday? You better believe it. (Don’t worry Mom, it’s lowfat).
  9. Yesterday I got a check in the mail from Winder Farms. I only worked there for a couple of weeks back in March and I already got paid for that time. So, it was completely out of the blue and so random. Seriously, it was so awesome that I started crying immediately. hahaha, oh I’m ridiculous.
  10. Random story: Last week I tried to wake T.J. up for work at 7 but he was up until 5 am working on projects for school. So, he told me to text his boss for him to tell her she’d be late. I asked what I should say and he replied, “Fun house mirrors.” I said, “T.J. that doesn’t make sense.” He said, “They always make sense.”
  11. Martha Stewart is on the Today show. Some of the reporters went to her house for a Thanksgiving dinner and to see her farm. How many people do you think help Martha? Does she even help anymore? She just said she is grateful for her grandchild… she has kids? Do you think she always was amazing at crafts? Why is she wearing leggings on the show? SO MANY QUESTIONS!
  12. I can’t wait to see The Muppets! I laughed so hard when I first saw this clip…

My friend just posted this quote on his Facebook wall. I completely forgot about it. Enjoy.

Last Saturday, my friends threw me a baby shower and it was just lovely, plus it was great to catch up with old friends. We got a lot of gifts, including a diaper jeanie, playmat, clothes, and books. All we need now is the baby!

Check out this spread… don’t I have the greatest friends?

Thanks to Hannah, Erin, and Amanda for all that they did! The baby and I appreciate it!

Oh, and to go along with the title of this post… make sure you watch this clip from The Office: Baby Shower episode.

About a week ago, I found out about the Justin Bieber-Baby Daddy Scandal. When my friend told me, I turned down JB’s Christmas album so I could get some more details.

I’ve been reading up about it and am PRAYING, okay not really praying, but WISHING on 11/11/11 at 11:11 that it is not his baby. (It’s not his baby, baby, baby, ohhhhh.) But seriously. If it is his, he will be losing one of his biggest fans. Not me, obviously, I’ll love his music no matter what. But I’m sure another big fan will stop loving him.

Saturday night, I was in one of those “blah” moods because I had slept all afternoon and evening (stupid cold) and T.J. said he would watch whatever I wanted to watch…

So, I put in Never Say Never-Justin Bieber’s movie/documentary. (Lucky T.J.) Believe it or not, T.J. was really impressed by the end. I didn’t make him watch all of the songs, we would just fast-forward to the commentary. It made him realize that, even if he’s not a fan of his music style, that he really is talented and that he just came from a humble background. The movie really makes me believe that Justin is not the type of person to get a girl pregnant. (Crossing my fingers.)

To close, Justin… Please take a paternity test ASAP as possible. And to the baby mama, if it is Justin’s baby… Didn’t you ever listen to Justin’s song, “Kiss and Tell.”

Here is one my creations, inspired from Pinterest. Just some simple artwork for our living room. I had all the paper and paint on hand-all I had to buy were the frames which were $1 each at Walmart.

And, I thought I would share this cute photo. At the end of one of our Book of Mormon study sessions last week, T.J. was zonked out. Needless to say, he had to go back and reread 🙂 Also, you get to see how big the LoveSac is. It takes up a lot of room, but it is soooo comfortable!

This week I’ve had a cold, so I stayed in, except for a couple of  little walks and picking up T.J. from school. By Friday, I realized I hadn’t worn makeup for days or worn a cute outfit so I decided I’d have a delicious dinner ready for T.J. when he got home and be dressed up… to show him that his wife is still in there!

I’m trying to use ingredients we have on hand right now and not but too many groceries, so I decided I would make chicken crepes. I don’t have any pictures, but I will tell you they were delicious and it made enough for leftovers which have been great.

First, while I thawed about eight chicken tenderloins, I made the crepe batter. I let that sit in the fridge while I cooked the chicken on the stovetop and then cut it into bite-sized pieces. Next, I made a roux. I actually made half of what the recipe called for and it was still WAY too much. I don’t like white sauce too much, plus it’s really fattening. So, I’m moderating the recipe a bit so next time I remember to make just a little bit. Then I made the crepes, folded them and lined them in a bottom of a baking dish, layering the cooked chicken, some white sauce, and two crepes to cover them on top. Sprinkle it with cheese (just a tinnnny bit of shredded cheese), and broil until the top is kind of crispy.

Next time I make it, I’m going to add some vegetables like tomatoes and mushrooms, but I didn’t have any fresh on hand. So, anyways… it turned out great and T.J. was very impressed that I had done my makeup and hair! But the sad thing about all of it was that at the end of the night, I was so tired/sick with the cold I didn’t feel like going on our date. Oh well!

Crepes

¾ cup of milk
½ cup water
2 eggs
1 cup flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp sugar

White Sauces

1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup butter
2 cups milk
salt & pepper
  1. I realize I do a lot of these bulleted blog posts. Hopefully they’re not annoying but sometimes I have a lot of random things to say and this seems like the best way to do it.
  2. I did my nails last night for the first time in forever. Including my toe nails. Guys, do you have any idea how hard that is? To bend that way? It’s quite an accomplishment. Now I have adorable sparkly red nails for the holidays!
  3. Yesterday I went to the doctor and he relieved some of my anxiety. You see, I was kind of down about choosing a doctor who had his own practice because that means he’s busier. But he told me that he delivers, on average, 1.5 babies a day. And he’s always monitoring his patients in labor, online, even when he’s not there at the hospital. Phewwww. He’s a funny man, that Dr. Judd. He said the one baby a day is the easy part, it’s the half baby that gets hard. 🙂 Oh and update, baby is in the right position with a perfect heartbeat.
  4. When I picked up our car from the mechanics the other day, I had to wait for like 20 minutes. It wasn’t a big deal, I just checked my mail and facebook. But then mechanic gave me a $15 gift card for iTunes for the trouble. Don’t mind if I do! What great customer service, don’t ya think? Plus, they cleaned our car inside and out before giving it to us! So, if you ever need to get your car fixed after an accident, go to Cascade Collision on State Street in Provo.
  5. With that $15 gift card, I bought Michael Bublé’s new Christmas album. It is so good. So so so good. And so much better than Justin Bieber’s, which is a huge deal that I’m saying that considering how much I love JB. The only reason you can compare them is because they both came out recently. Anyway, I highly recommend that you buy it immediately. And start listening to it immediately.
  6. My new nickname should be Martha Stewart because I’ve been doing a craft every day over here at the Derrick household! I will show you everything shortly!
  7. I have had the BEST week with scripture study. I’m telling you, downloading the audio version of the Book of Mormon and then following along was such a good idea. Please do it too so we can talk about how much fun it is! The guy reading has an intense voice and gets really into it! And at the rate we’re going, we will be finished mid-December. Once I turn it on, I don’t want to stop because it’s like watching a movie or something.
  8. Thanksgiving is in TWO WEEKS!?!?! Where the heck did time go? I swear I was just laying in a tube on the wave pool at Seven Peaks! And you better believe I’m going shopping on Black Friday for baby stuff! It will be perfect because I’ll be 6 days from my due date and so no one will mess with me! Or… it will put me in labor! Even better. Anyone in the area want to go with me at dusk?

I always play the, “What was going on one year ago,” game. One year ago, a little seventh grader was changing my life.

As you might remember, I did a mentoring program while I was at BYU where we got paired up with sixth graders and hung out with them on campus for an hour each week. The last girl I mentored was the most special to me. She had a bunch of problems at home and was in and out of juvi. But this rough girl who had seen more than me in her life, even though I was double her age, actually liked me and we had a great time together that semester.

Unfortunately, the semester ended and I couldn’t contact her out of the program.

Then randomly, months later, last October I had a craving for Italian sausage. So I stopped at the grocery on my way home late at night and guess who I saw? My mentee, Savannah. She was leaving the grocery store and planning on walking home with two friends in the dark with all their groceries. I felt like I should offer to drive them home because it was late and cold. I told her if she ever needed anything to call me and so I handed her my number but expected to never hear or see from her again.

Then a couple weeks later, she called me. Savannah’s mom had had a stroke and was in the hospital and no one would give her a ride to see her. I picked Savannah up and walked her down the long hallway to see her mother laying in a hospital bed.

The next couple of weeks were some of the most powerful times of my life. I can’t explain it. As I served her, got to know her, got to see how blessed I was compared to this little girl, I changed inside. I remember coming home one evening after hanging out with her and I just started sobbing. But then I realized that they weren’t tears of sadness, they were tears of love. Through serving my mentee, just spending time with her and giving her the attention no one had ever given her, I felt extreme love. But the love wasn’t just from me. It was from my Heavenly Father. I knew that day that He was specifically aware of Savannah and her situation. I could feel how much he loved her and knew that I was in her life for a reason. The reason was to let her know He cared and was there for her.

And so I shared that with her. We had so many great talks. I was able to share my testimony with her many times and let her know that God loved her and was always there for her, no matter what.

Right before I left to go home for Christmas, she was put in the hospital and we lost contact. Her mom didn’t have money for the cell phone and her dad had no answer when I asked her when she’d be out of the hospital. I never knew her last name and so every way I tried to contact her was a dead end. I was devastated. Devastated. I couldn’t believe that she was out of my life. I thought I was really supposed to help her and be there for her long term. I missed my little friend.

After a couple of months, I finally realized that it wasn’t a sad ending after all. I may not know what happened to Savannah or know where she is today but I do know that I was in her life at a specific time for certain reasons, some of which I’m sure I’m not even aware of. I don’t know why the time had to be so short, but I know I helped her and most importantly, she helped me. She taught me the true meaning of charity and changed my life forever.

  1. Our crib arrived today! Thanks to my in-laws for the amazing gift and for setting it up! I will show pics once the nursery is complete.
  2. I’m in a very crafty mood. Now if I just felt good enough to do something… Stupid cold!
  3. Julie and Julia was just on. Do you love that movie as much as me? It’s one of my all-time favorites.
  4. I ate a spinach salad for dinner. Maybe that doesn’t seem like anything to share, but I kind of feel like I should get a round of applause for it… Yes… Thank you!
  5. I set up the baby swing tonight! It’s adorable… plus, I paid for it through gift cards, so that’s even more awesome.
  6. Have you ever tried to listen to the Book of Mormon while you follow along? One word, four syllables: incredible. I highly recommend it. Download it here.
  7. I badly need a haircut. I’ve worn my hair up with a headband so much lately… that’s when you know it’s really time.
  8. We get our car back tomorrow. Did I tell you someone hit us in a parking lot on campus? Well, the car’s been in the shop since last Monday and so we’ve had a rental. It’s a Hyundai Tuscon. I’m seriously in love with it, except for the fact it guzzles gas! But, I will be sad to turn it back in tomorrow.
  9. I think we have decided on a baby name. But you will just have to wait and find out when she comes…
  10. In correspondence with the title, we watched Ghostbusters this weekend and I thought I’d share one of my favorite parts with you.

I was a big Barenaked Ladies (the band) fan growing up. Probably because my brother loved them and so I had to like everything he liked. But they were a really good band and last night, I was reminded of it.

Pregnancy + Sore Throat = Insomnia

I started singing “Who Needs Sleep” in my head then decided to get out of bed (hey, that rhymed!). Already this morning (it’s not even 7:30 yet), I have taken a shower, read in my birthing book, eaten a bowl of oatmeal, drank a cup of hot cider, worked a little for my dad, read the posts on my Google Reader, and now I’m finishing a blog post. Pretty impressive.

And although I was kind of bitter that I couldn’t sleep at all, it’s (1) preparing me for a couple of weeks and (2) I get to watch the snow fall right now!
