My good friend from high school, Blair, and her little sister, Anna, stopped by on the Thursday before Christmas. Usually we get together often when I visit but Blair was busy going on a cruise with her boyfriend. Lucky duck. Anyway, here are some pictures of the afternoon. My little niece Claire always has loved Blair, so all morning long before she came over, Claire kept asking when she’d be arriving. Pretty cute. We spent the afternoon playing games, going to Target, and listening to Claire play instruments for us.

My family (minus my brother and his wife)

Two days after I arrived in Cincinnati, I got the flu. The real influenza. I haven’t had it since I was a kid, but those couple days where I had the chills, fever, sore throat, cough (which is still lingering), sinus pressure, and vomiting were a complete drag! I was too sick to go to church so I missed the Christmas program where my dad spoke and my sister played the violin. On Christmas Eve, I couldn’t go to Christmas Mass with my family and friends! I was too sick to get a stocking together or put out “Santa” gifts for Eva, so by Christmas morning-when I felt so miserable and the kids were opening their Santa gifts-I broke down in tears. At the time, I couldn’t believe that I was too sick to enjoy the first real Christmas with Eva. But, after taking a shower, eating an obscene amount of goetta to drown my sorrows, and taking lots of medicine, I felt a little better and got to enjoy the day! T.J. came down with a mild flu and on Christmas night, threw up and had the chills. Poor boy!

The day after Christmas, I started getting chest pain, so I headed to this little clinic at the grocery store (who knew that even existed?) and within a few days of taking two prescriptions, I was feeling myself again! On the downside, as I was getting better, my dad caught the flu. It got so bad he had to go to the ER on Monday. He’s finally feeling a little better but still has no voice and is coughing up a storm.

There you have it. My sister said it will be a Christmas to remember, but I sure hope next year our Christmas will be remembered in a better way!

On Friday, December 21, my family and I saw Amahl and the Night Visitors on Xavier’s campus in Cincinnati. For those of you not familiar with this opera, it is about the three kings who stop by a poor woman’s home on their journey. The opera is about the interaction between the kings and the woman’s son-Amahl. We grew up listening to the music and seeing the opera every couple Christmases, but it had been quite some time since I saw it live. If you ever have the chance to see this opera, you should definitely go! The particular version we saw this year used huge puppets as the kings with the opera singers back with the orchestra. From a creativity point, it was very clever and the puppets were beautiful but I really missed seeing the expressions of the singers.

Unfortunately, as the night progressed, my flu was really starting to kick in. So, we hurried home after the show and I went to bed at 9!

This year I made a decision at the beginning of the Holiday season that I was going to keep it simple. I thought it would help me remember the reason we celebrate Christmas, help our budget, and help me enjoy the month more than in years past. Here’s what we did:

Presents. T.J. and I got each other one gift each. I got him a sweater, he gave me a trip to the nail salon. And for Eva, I got her a toy from the DI (that looks brand new, BTW) and a new winter jumper for her to wear. Deciding to cut down on gifts really eliminated unnecessary stress, especially financially. I loved doing this so much this year that I’ve decided that, no matter our financial situation, I will continue doing this in the future.

Parties. Usually I throw a cookie exchange or sometime of festive party, but I decided to axe it this year since our committees at church were in charge of the Christmas party. Thankfully a lot of people helped out at the ward party, so I was not nearly as stressed out as I was for the Halloween party. Looking back, I wish I could have gotten together with my closest girl friends to do a cookie exchange like usual, but there just was not enough time. Perhaps next year?

Decorations. We, of course, got our Christmas decorations out. But I had all of these plans to make Christmas crafts and as each day passed, I decided hanging out with Eva sounded like more fun. At least when I get home tomorrow, I won’t have as much stuff to take down!

What I’ve decided: We can’t do it all. Sometimes I try to think I can, especially when I see so many people going above and beyond what I ever thought was possible! But then I take on more than I can handle and get worn out. In the end, it really helped me enjoy this Christmas season and I’m glad I decided to simplify! Maybe in the future we will have more time or more money, but until then… a simple Christmas works for us!

We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have a great New Year!

With Love,
The Derricks

I have flown with Eva a lot this past year, and only once with help. Each time has been dramatically different because of how fast this Diva Eva has grown up. There have been easy flights where she slept the whole time, busy flights where she played nonstop, and difficult flights when she cried a lot. But none of the trips have been as horrible as this last flight out of Salt Lake to visit my family in Kentucky for Christmas.

It began very early, our flight left at 8 am so we had to get Eva up before she was ready, which already is a recipe for disaster. I wasn’t too worried though, considering usually I fly by myself and have handled it. But when our flight was delayed for two and a half hours, things got worse by the minute. Eva was already tired and our flight hadn’t departed yet. We boarded the plane, then an hour later, got off the plane. We tried to find another way to Kentucky, but the layover to Chicago-the original plan-was the only way it would work because so many flights were being cancelled due to weather problems.

Three hours after the plane was supposed to depart, we FINALLY were in the air. We entertained Eva until she got to a point where she was so tired, she wouldn’t do anything except whine. After MANY prayers, she fell asleep and we didn’t move for the next half and hour, in fear she would feel a twitch and wake up.

Little did we know that the arm rest was loose and would later crash down on her. Not only did it awaken poor baby Eva, it startled her so much she wouldn’t stop crying until we landed. We had already used our secret weapon, the candy cane, so we just let her cry, sip her bottle, and hoped we would never see anyone on that plane for the rest of our lives.

We got to Chicago. The flight to Louisville had long ago departed. The next flight was 7:00 pm, five hours away. Then I realized we could try to catch a flight to Cincinnati instead, since it’s closer to our home anyway. (It’s too expensive to fly into usually.) Thankfully, there was a flight departing soon and, if we hurried, we would make it-although our luggage, they said, definitely would not.

The service desk told us to take the shuttle to another terminal, which sounded easy enough, except that it left from the lower level. I asked a lady where the elevator was, since I only saw steps. This is what she said:

There is no elevator. Just steps.

Excuse me?!? I then replied:
What do handicapped people do?

They TAKE THE STEPS or WALK.

Well, thanks for the EXTREMELY vague help and the incredibly rude attitude, lady! Eva was in the jogging stroller and our stuff was all piled in the bottom. I told T.J. the situation and we decided we’d carry her down in the stroller. But then she yelled over to me saying:

That MERCEDES isn’t going to fit in the shuttle. You’ll have to fold it up. And the shuttle is here, so get going!

Enter a flood of tears, from yours truly, me. Also, I never want to fly United again because of her!

Long story, short. After Eva’s diaper leaking on T.J., a diaper blowout as soon as we got on the plane, and our luggage getting lost until the next day, we finally arrived at my parents’ home in Fort Thomas, KY!

Wish us luck for our flight tomorrow! After that last trip, I don’t think it could get any worse so we are probably prepared for everything!

On Sunday, December 16, we got up bright and early to hear T.J.’s cousin give his homecoming talk. It was so fun to go to church with all of T.J.’s family and to dress Eva up in her Christmas dress (which was mine as a baby). We proceeded to T.J.’s aunt’s home for brunch and then spent the rest of the day up in American Fork with T.J.’s immediate family.

After the babies napped, we had them open up the presents from Grandma and Grandpa Santa. The girls got baby dolls in strollers and Cohen got a little car to sit on or push. It was so cute to see them play with the toys and (attempt) to share. Time sure flies – it feels just like yesterday when we were holding our newborns in our arms on Christmas.

On Thursday, December 13, I went up to Salt Lake with three of my girlfriends to see if we could get standby tickets to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert-Dress Rehearsal. My mom went last year and was able to get tickets without any problem, so we decided to take the chance and if wouldn’t work out we planned on walking around City Creek and getting Cheesecake. Win/Win either way.

We were able to get two tickets, but there were four of us and we didn’t want to split up so we decided to watch the projection of it in the Tabernacle. It was still a great concert and so fun to get out for the night with my friends.
