Pro.Crast.In.A.Tion.

I have to write a 5 page paper to turn in tomorrow about my internship, comparing it to the book, The Tipping Point.

I don’t want to write it. It’s summer!  I just wrote a talk, isn’t that enough writing for the break?

And yeah, I know, I know, Mom… “If I wasn’t messing around on here, I could have written it already.”

But I didn’t, and it’s ten o’clock already.  Hmm.

A Savior on Mount Zion…

… is what T.J. and I are assigned to talk on this Sunday at church.

That’s right, we got called to speak.  I guess it’ll be a good experience for me.  Although I am dreading having to write (and give) the talk, I know I’ll learn a lot from it.

Well, what do you think I should talk specifically about?  The first thing that I thought of when I heard the topic was going to the temple and doing saving ordinances for others. But in advertising we are taught to not go with the first thing that comes to our heads. That is usually the easy way out and the most common thing about what you were thinking about.

So, I kind of want to do something else.  I think I want to talk about being an example to others and the difference it will make.

I was reading in 2 Nephi 1 last night where Lehi is pleading with his children to keep the commandments and follow the Lord.

“Awake,” he says, “Awake.”

Through Lehi’s powerful testimony, dedication, and most importantly perseverance, he was an example to his children and was a Savior on Mount Zion for his posterity.

What do you think?  Should I go with this?  Do you have any other examples or scriptural references?

Oh by the way, you should read the rest of this chapter and imagine your father or Bishop saying the words to you.  It really is a powerful chapter and helps you realize what you need to be doing in your life.

Shrek, do the roar!

I haven’t been feeling too well this week so I have been stuck in the house a lot.  I was beginning to have cabin fever, so T.J. said he would take me to see any movie I wanted to see.  I decided on Letters to Juliet because it’s in the dollar theater and everyone says it was great.  T.J. is a great sport, and so he agreed to the chick flick.

We got our tickets ahead of time and went to the creamery for a kids meal (it’s an amazing deal: hamburger, fries, drink, icecream all for $3.50!).  After eating, we headed back to the theater and were about ten minutes early, and the theater was already packed!

There were two seats left next to a couple who brought their baby.

No thanks.

So with the help of my iPhone, we headed over to see Shrek Forever After, a few theaters down starting in a few minutes.

It actually was pretty good.  Funny.  Cute.  Precious.  I even cried?? What? No…..

Creative Problem Solving

For those who do not know, I had an internship for about 6 months at a place called Lava 7.  They are social media marketers.  It was a blast.  I learned a lot and it really made me want to continue in social media marketing.

Anyways, now that my internship is over, I am supposed to turn in a portfolio and resume to the internship office.  Well, since I worked with social media in my internship, I decided to create my portfolio and resume online.

So, check it out HERE.  Let me know what you think and if you see any mistakes or errors.  A few things that I still need to do is add more items to my portfolio, change the font to a sans serif, and get my own domain name.

It’s still a work in a progress, but hopefully it’s a good start.

Similes, Smiles, and Harry Potter

So, T.J. and I haven’t been the greatest at doing a “scheduled Family Home Evening” each week. Since we pray and read the scriptures together, and hang out together everyday, all day, we kind of forget that we should do it. Well, one of my goals for the week was to have FHE.

Monday came along, but we kind of brushed it off until T.J.’s brother Dustin and his wife Lindsay stopped by. We all decided to do FHE together using an activity in our “FHE for Newlyweds” book. Here’s how the rest of the night went.

  • Arguing whether or not we should sing, I said we should because our Stake President told us to always sing a hymn before FHE.
  • Opening Song: I’m trying to be like Jesus to the tune of Harry Potter Theme
  • Opening Prayer (we actually didn’t have to do “not it” or “nose goes”, we are mature and righteous)
  • Randomly opening the book to find an activity
  • Activity: “Similes and Smiles”
    • The point of the activity is to compare your spouse to each of the things listed.  Some of the items were shoes, cars, places, celebrities, and animals.
  • Cars Simile
    • Katie: T.J. you are like a lamborghini.  You’re reallllly cool, slick, and stylish!
    • T.J.: You are like a beetle bug.
    • Katie: Really? Cause I hate that car more than anything…
  • Shoes Simile
    • K: You are like a pair of oxfords because they are my favorite and what I really want right now.
    • T: You are like oxfords too!
    • K: Did you just say that because I said that?
    • T: Well, I couldn’t think of any other shoe.
  • Animal
    • I compared him to a panther and T.J. compared me to a mini giraffe. Not much dialogue to this one.
  • Celebrity

Dustin and Lindsay didn’t participate too much, they mostly just laughed.  Although Lindsay compared Dustin to a moose, but I’m pretty sure that’s just because her favorite animal is a moose.

The point of the story here is that, although we need to be doing FHE, I’m not really sure if this one needed to be had.  But I must say, it was memorable, if nothing else.

Stuffed Green Peppers

6 large bell peppers
1 lb. lean ground beef or ground turkey
1/2 c. chopped onion
2 cloves garlic
1 16-oz. can tomato sauce
1 c. cooked rice
2 tsp. salt
6 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cut tops from green peppers; discard seeds & membranes. Add green peppers to boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes, uncovered; drain.

In skillet, cook beef and onion until meat is cooked. Drain off excess fat. Add rice, salt, garlic, 1 c. tomato sauce, and a dash of pepper.

Place peppers on 9×9 ungreased pan. Stuff peppers with meat mixture and pour remaining tomato sauce over peppers. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.  Remove foil and sprinkle cheese over peppers.  Bake an additional 15 minutes.

It’s a really easy and tasty recipe.  You can add additional ingredients to the mixture, as well, such as tomatoes or green peppers.  Next time I make the recipe, I’m going to get a variety of bell peppers, so the dish is colorful!

Katie and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

I didn’t feel like going to work today.  But alas, I rolled out of bed thirty minutes late because I knew I shouldn’t miss work.  I threw on a t-shirt and put my hair in a bun. So, my number one rule was already broken: If you want to have a good day, you have to look the part.  I know that sounds silly, but when I put effort into getting ready, wear a nice outfit, and do my hair and makeup, I just feel better about myself and thus, am in a good mood and am optimistic.  But when I wear a t-shirt, old vans, put my hair up, etc., the day usually does not go as smoothly.

So I dropped T.J. off for work so he wouldn’t be late, then went to park the car.  I called home to chat with my parents for a few minutes before work.  While I was on the the phone, I crossed the street (at the same crosswalk I have crossed everyday for two years, shown above) and then noticed the cars were going really fast.  I looked at the light and saw it was green, but for some reason, I didn’t run or pick up my step.  I just kept talking on the phone, like a lethargic idiot.

Then it hits me.

Not the car, but the thought that I better pick it up or else I will be hit by the car.

Screeches.

Running.

More screeches by another car.

Embarrassment, humiliation, adrenaline.

It was awful. And remember, I was already in a funk.

And that is the story of Katie and the Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very Bad Day.
