Awkward Situation: How to Correct Someone Nicely

I’ve known my bestie Blair Murphy since 4th grade. That’s a long time, folks. We tell each other just about everything because that’s just what you do with your closest girlfriends. But there was this one time, about three months ago when I realized Blair was pronouncing Eva’s name incorrectly and I wasn’t sure how to tell her.

Let me back up first and say I know Eve is usually the shorter version of Evelyn, which is Eva’s full name. But I just liked Eva more PLUS I really like the idea of having a full formal name, just like my full name is Kathryn but I go by Katie. I also liked the “Evelyn” spelling more than “Evalyn” which my brother has bugged me about a lot. Most importantly, I knew it was going to be a name that people would probably pronounce wrong because there are so many popular names that are so similar to Eva such as Ava, Evie, and Eva-pronounced like Eh-va. It could go on and on.

But we pronounce her name with a long-E:  EE-va

Anyway, back to Blair. I noticed that she was calling her Ava. With a long-A sound. But I didn’t correct her on it the first time, which was mistake because with each phone call, it made it harder and harder to tell her. It’s kind of an awkward thing to correct, ya know? I wasn’t offended at all, I just thought she should probably know what her real name is. Ha.

So, two months later (yeah, it went on for two whole months), we were talking about Blair’s boyfriend who has an unusual name. Then the thought came to me… this is the perfect segue to telling her!

I said something along the lines of this:

Uhm, Blair. I need to tell you something that might be kind of awkward at first. But once I tell you, we’re going to laugh a lot about it.

Okay?

Soooo… you know how you call my daughter Ava?

Yeah?

She actually goes by Eva.

Blair and I immediately started laughing and then Blair said she wondered why we spelled it that way if it was pronounced Ava. Blair also made fun of me for not telling her for two months…

Like I said, I know I had it coming when naming her Eva and I’m never offended when someone pronounces it incorrectly. But I thought this story was pretty funny and my mom thought I should share it.

And just in case you still don’t know how to pronounce it, just copy how Wall-E says Eve’s name (Skip to 1:12). EEEE-VA!

Oh my gosh, I forgot how much I love that movie.

Ya Gotta Be Kidding Me

… I cannot believe it’s March. MARCH! I swear T.J. and I were just shopping last week on Black Friday. But no, that was over three months ago! And March is my birthday month, which I also swear I just had my Justin Bieber surprise birthday party last month. But THAT was almost one WHOLE year ago. Where does time go?! SLOW DOWN!

Well, as usual, here is a list of random stuff going on in my head/life:

  1. I need to get in shape. And lose weight. At this rate, I’m going to have to wear a baggy wetsuit to Seven Peaks this summer. I’m considering logging everything I do/eat like I did last time I wanted (and was successful) to lose weight. Hmmmm…
  2. T.J. got two interviews for (paying!) internships in NYC this summer. Please pray that things work out! It also would be wonderful if he got the one at Johnson & Johnson because it would mean I’d be able to stay out there longer!
  3. This week had its ups and downs being alone with Eva, but I think I’ve finally gotten into a routine without T.J. which gives me hope that this summer I’ll be able to do it. The best days were when T.J. and I would say a prayer and read the scriptures together over the phone. Thanks for the suggestion, Mark and Kelly (T.J.’s parents).
  4. I have the greatest friends and family. I had so many friends text me, ask me to go out with them, and visit this week while T.J. was gone. And T.J.’s family checked up on me and had me over to give me a little break with Eva. My family back at home called often, as well, just to make sure I was doing okay! Thanks everyone! I made it!
  5. In less than three weeks, I’ll be home! I cannot wait to visit and have all of my siblings and nieces meet little Eva!
  6. T.J. comes home in just a couple of hours. I’ve got butterflies!!!
  7. I went to this little French Bakery (See number 1) on State Street last Saturday and I cannot stop thinking about it. Everything was delicious and it was so fun to try new food!
  8. I finally gave the TV show The Big Bang Theory a chance and it turns out that I actually really like it.
  9. I haven’t been to the movies for three months. Depressing.
  10. My friends shared this video on YouTube. I’m obsessed with it. And her. It’s hilarious.

No Fun

A sick baby, that is. Eva has the sniffles and I’ve got a bit of a sore throat. We rested all day and hopefully we will be back to normal tomorrow.

Until then, enjoy this video. I expose Eva to great music. You know, Justin Bieber, Glee, and the classic Britney Spears. Okay, before you say anything (especially my mom) just know that I had her listen to this song because Eva is a BABY and the title of the song is BABY ONE MORE TIME. So, it seemed fitting.

Activity Time

I’m reading the book “The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems” and it’s true… everything I have implented from the book so far has really helped! I highly recommend this book if you want your baby to sleep on her own and leave you with a bit of sanity.

The baby whisperer talks about, what she calls, E.A.S.Y. That stands for Eat, Activity, Sleep, and You time. I’ve been trying to get Eva into this routine and it’s worked like a charm so far. She’s slept five days in a row just getting up once through the night to feed.

Here are a couple glimpses of “Activity” time:

Hilair

I’m sure you’ve seen this video, but just in case you haven’t… watch it now. And then watch it again. And again and again and again. Then you can laugh. But don’t laugh before you watch it a bunch or else you’ll miss something funny.

And to my mom, ignore the title of the video.
