The Power of High Tops

Last year I participated in the National L’Oreal Brandstorm competition. With two other team members, we created a product solution, SWOT analysis, and media plan for Diesel. The experience was a blast. We didn’t win, but it was still so exciting to compete.

But the best part of the competition was what showed up on my doorstep one afternoon.

After opening the UPS box, I discovered the most beautiful high tops I had ever laid eyes on.

My amazing brother bought these Diesel high tops for me because of Brandstorm. Is he great or what?

The Man Who Created the Man Who Your Man Could Smell Like

Today Jason Bagley from W+K Advertising Agency spoke to us advertising majors. Jason created this:

And this:

So needless-to-say, it was an incredible lecture! It was inspiring to listen to Jason’s story, starting as an undergraduate at BYU in our Advertising program. He told us that we need to create honest and transparent advertising. That doesn’t mean it can’t be creative, the ads can even be in the most ridiculous manner. Just do something people will love.

I am so happy I got the opportunity to listen to Jason today. I really love my major, but sometimes I feel like I’m a bit over my head. I don’t know exactly what I want to do with my degree and I’m surrounded by these amazingly talented people who have a direction and a plan. But today, listening to him, it gave me a little more faith in myself, as well as helped push me into this semester with some enthusiasm and excitement.

Update

I know, I know, I write so many blog posts. I’m still obsessed, but it’s for my sanity. It helps me clear my thoughts.

Anyway, update for today! My first class was great. I got there early so I wouldn’t have to worry about everyone staring at me when I walked in. I got to be the starer. The class was Communications 432- Account Planning. My professor is great and I am getting excited about my major again.

Also, my best bud Carrie came to the class so that was clearly awesome (I’m crossing my fingers that a space will open up so she can add it).

Anyway, no need for an anxiety attack today. After class, Carrie and I headed to Sonic for a little break because we have our elective together at 4 – Media and the First Amendment. I love media law, so I’m very excited about this one too!

But the BEST part is that Carrie and I checked the roll to see who was in the next class. And our favorite character in the major is in the class. I have no tolerance for him but on the other hand I love having classes with him because he gives me great stories! So, hopefully after this class tonight I’ll have a great blog post story for you!

Creative Problem Solving

For those who do not know, I had an internship for about 6 months at a place called Lava 7.  They are social media marketers.  It was a blast.  I learned a lot and it really made me want to continue in social media marketing.

Anyways, now that my internship is over, I am supposed to turn in a portfolio and resume to the internship office.  Well, since I worked with social media in my internship, I decided to create my portfolio and resume online.

So, check it out HERE.  Let me know what you think and if you see any mistakes or errors.  A few things that I still need to do is add more items to my portfolio, change the font to a sans serif, and get my own domain name.

It’s still a work in a progress, but hopefully it’s a good start.

Great commercial.  Love the giraffe.

p.s. thanks Hannah for showing this to me!

I’m sure you’ve already seen this, but I still want to blog about it.

I work at the Harold B. Lee Library.  I’ve worked here for about 2 and a half years, which, in this time, has created my undying love for the HBLL and the LAO.

Well, I’m sure you’ve already seen this YouTube video because everyone and their dog has posted it on their Facebook profile about ten times.  But, I have to post it on here too because of my love for the library.

It was not created by my department, but done by the media productions lab on the 6th floor of the library (yes, there’s a 6th floor of the library) with the help of a HumorU student.  I wish I could take credit for it, but at least my claim to fame is that I work at the HBLL here at BYU!

I wish I had a Teletransporter.

At my internship today, my boss shared the following link with me:

From an advertising student’s point of view, I think this idea is so clever.  Not only did they incorporate guerrilla marketing through the use of a humorous, unconventional, and interactive concept; but also, part of their strategy, and what made it so popular, was using social media marketing to spread their videos.

And although I do not fully condone the idea of the teletransporter, I have to admit it would be pretty cool to have one or use one in certain situations.

I’d be the hamster in the cardboard box.

This weekend, I saw Karate Kid (Which, btw I loved it and will post about it soon).  Before the movie started, a new Kia Soul hamster commercial came on.  Call me immature, call me lame, I really don’t care, but something about these dancing and ghetto hamsters is awesome.

Kia came out with a commercial for the superbowl, I don’t know if you remember it, but it was pretty funny too. Way to go Kia.
